What IS a compensator ... this looks more like a Seperator ... removing the muzzle blast turbulence away from the exiting bullet ...

Mako, I would say a compensator is a device that redirects the combustion gases in such a way to lessen muzzle flip and felt recoil. A diffuser (I hope I am spelling that right) is as you describe, a device that attempts to seperate the gases from the bullet as it leaves the muzzle to lessen the effects of the turbulence.
Some of these devices can probably increase or decrease accuracy. We have probably all heard the stories of the M41 compensator causing a loss of accuracy if not kept clean. On the other hand there is the BOSS system on Browning rifles that can be tuned to the barrel vibrations and dramatically improve accuracy. I also once heard the the accuracy of a U.S Rifle M14 was inhanced by the flash suppressor/muzzle brake.
Just my take on it.

While it looks like a seperator as you describe it, it functions as a compensator. Muzzle flip is indeed reduced with the compensator installed. This may be as a result of the holes in the top of the compensator - these are used to affix the front sight, but two of the three are always left wide open to vent gasses to the atmosphere. No matter how it works, it does indeed work!
