Sight Image

Hi, I have a beginners question about sight images.

I have been shooting for a few months ( you can see my journey here https://www.instagram.com/10meterpistol/ ), I haven't been able to get any local coaching so have watched lots of videos and read books. My local club isnt really set up for anything other than shooting, ie they don't have the numbers to have a coach.

I have seen I should be shooting with the first image with the foresight aligned with the back under the black center. I have been using the second method where the foresight touches the black center.

I set the sights yesterday to the "correct" method and really struggled to get the the right position ( up and down wise ) as I found it hard to judge the center of the gap between the black center and the bottom of the target with the pistols barrel blocking the bottom.

Am I missing something, will it come or am I better going back to using the bottom of the black center as a guide for elevation?

Not saying it's right, but my preference is to set my sights such that the gap on either side of the front post is equal to the gap between the front post and the black bull.

I've always understood that your #1 is a sub-six hold, and your #2 is a six o'clock hold. People use both. Others put the top of the front sight right where they want the point of impact to be. The highest scorer I know does it that way. I'm told that's helpful because you don't have to adjust your hold for different target sizes, for example during a Sport Pistol match. Take your pick. I've tried 'em all. Using #2 these days, myself.

I have found that trying to have a precise aim point is, counter-intuitively, counter- productive.
Instead, I think about area aiming. Just be in an area the size of the 9-ring below the black. If you trigger properly within that area, and you have a proper sight picture then you’ll get at least a nine.
Do that 60 times.
Stop trying to hit the x.

Center hold works just as well.

Just have to convince your not to aim at the center of that black target.

Any area of that black target will hold.

Just to convince and believe any where on black target will do.

You can see your alignment well on black target, it doesn’t have to be sub-6.

Neither sight picture is correct.
Should look like this..

Foresight width between 70-100% of apparent black diameter.
Foresight Height to make the sight appear as a "square".
Adjust Rearsight depth to achieve this square.
Rearsight width to appear as 2-1 ratio for precision,
IE 1/2+1+1/2
Rearsight width to appear as 3-1 ratio for Rapidfire.
Placement of sight under black to appear with the same light gap
on top as the width of the side light gap's.

Rapid fire sight picture will be centre aim
(or just below the white aiming line. approx 10.5/10.6 low)

If you use image 2 you will get a mirage between the top of the sight and the bottom of the black so never really know where you are.

If your sight picture looks like this, you need to stop checking your watch.

If you are over 40 both images in op will be improved by a wider rear sight or more narrow front post.

If you are over 40 both images in op will be improved by a wider rear sight or more narrow front post.

Thats interesting I hadn't thought of making that change. I do wear a reading/close up lens to see the sights better, so might try this too.
