The piston does not strike the pellet.
The pellet seals in the barrel providing air resistance to the movement of the piston, slowing it before it hits the "stop".

The pellet is moving down the barrel well before the piston stops and would also be significantly (catastrophically?) deformed if struck hard enough to shoot 10m.
