Friends of Shooting Sports,
We are very pleased to advise you that beginning this fall, Augusta State University will establish it’s first rifle team in recent times. Athletic Director Clint Bryant has enthusiastically taken the lead in paving the way for this important step forward for the sport. Coach Bryant has expressed his marked interest in seeing another championship quality team take it’s place at Augusta State. Coach Gary Engen of Augusta will serve as head coach of the team, which will be formed on August 18, 2003. LTC David Freeman, Professor of Military Science at Augusta States Army ROTC Unit will serve as faculty advisor for the fledgling club. The team will compete in the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference, made up of teams from N Carolina State, Clemson, Citadel, N Georgia State, Mercer, Wofford, Georgia Military College, Birmingham Southern and Georgia Tech. It is hoped that after 2 years in club status, the team will be strong enough to apply for full NCAA status. If you know of junior and senior high school students who are shooters and would be interested in attending ASU and participating, please have them contact Coach Engen at gengen@comcast.net
Unfortunately, during it’s first year the team will have little funding aside from the standard student activity fund. Students will have to provide their own equipment and probably a fair amount of their travel expenses. We are therefore asking the shooting community to help us get started. Even the smallest donation would be greatly appreciated. $10 will buy 500 match grade pellets or 100 targets. $150 would buy pellets and targets for two team-members for a whole year or pay for three team-member’s travel expenses for a weekend match.
Georgia has the nations best high school rifle program with some 120 teams set to compete this fall in varsity competition. But unfortunately there are currently no NCAA rifle teams in Georgia and our best shooters are forced to go out of state in order to continue. The establishment of this team will provide an outlet for those who would rather stay instate and use their HOPE scholarships. Please send any amount that you can afford to: ASU Rifle Team c/o Coach Gary Engen, 1327 Winter Street, Augusta, GA 30904 (make checks to ASU Rifle Team)
Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
Sincerely,
Phillip A. Williams
Chairman, Junior Programs
