Local Non-Profit Offers Scholarships for Pistol Shooters at University of Utah
SALT LAKE CITY- A pair of $1000.00 scholarships for aspiring competitive pistol shooters attending the University of Utah this fall are now being offered by the Utah Precision Marksmanship Society of Salt Lake City. UPMS hosts a number of competition and marksmanship training programs in the Salt Lake metro area and is a major supporter of the nationally ranked Shootin’ Utes pistol team. Ute athletes won two team bronze and two individual bronze medals, along with a pair of All-American honors at the 2003 US Collegiate Pistol Championships at Ft. Benning, Georgia, this spring.
These scholarships are available to both men and women. Applicants need a high school GPA of 3.0 of higher and must be enrolled as a full-tine undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Utah and maintain a GPA of 2.7 of higher during the term of the scholarship.
In addition, it is desirable but not mandatory they have some training and experience in competitive pistol marksmanship. Applicants must also be willing to participate in an organized mental and physical training and collegiate competition program.
High school, community college and university students interested in becoming involved in the sport to be eligible for future scholarships should contact Matt DeLong, Utah pistol team coach at (801) 581-7462 to learn about the UPMS junior shooting program and the Utah State Junior Olympic Shooting Championships. Application forms are available by e-mail at Delong@physics.utah.edu or on the web at www.upms.org and must be postmarked no later than 15 July 2003.
