Sling for Small Shooter

Post by marky-d »

My son has recently completed his 'Sharpshooter' certification in the NRA/Winchester 4-Position program, which means he will be moving from the supported prone position into the others. That means he will need a sling. Can anyone tell me if a 'normal' adult sling will adjust small enough for a 9yr old? He's only about 4' 4" at this point.

Are there any recommendations for a 'youth' sling, or other options to get by until he gets bigger? I was considering rigging something up with some webbing, although I know it's not ideal.

Similarly, are there any reasonable shooting coat options for someone so small? I don't want to invest in anything fancy or custom, since he'll probably outgrow it quickly.

Thanks,

Here' an inexpensive one that will last awhile: https://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Daisy_Ma ... ength/3407

Skip a jacket for now, and just use a sweatshirt one or two sizes smaller than he usually wears (so it is tight). Put a safety pin on the sleeve below where the sling goes around the arm.

For a glove, look at the "lost & found" box at school, and find a lost winter glove.

This is the one we recommend to anyone looking for an upgrade to the Avanti. Stays in place better and I’ve never seen one break. This site has a good selection of shooting apparel as well.

I second this recommendation. Bought this sling for both of my girls (11 now, had these since they were 10) who shoot 3P with Anschutz rifles. It is a tough little sling, doesn’t budge, and grips well to the arm. It’s thin so it fits around their hands well on the stock.

It's funny, but I just bought a CMP 853 for my son to use, and it came with one of the Avanti slings. I fiddled with it for a while and couldn't figure out how it was supposed to be set up! All the straps were unbuckled and hanging free. I need spend a few minutes comparing it to the picture on the Champ's Choice site to get it right. :)
