Sub-6, somewhere.

Cannot be more specific as I just go for where my eyes are comfortable on that day. Trying to name a ring ruins the concept of area aiming.

+1.

If you can see the rings you have the wrong lens!

Sub-6. My mind just sees the "aiming area" and tells me when to release the shot.

Here's an interesting thought for consideration.

I don't aim anymore. As a matter of fact, I've really come to dislike that term. I found that to get better I had to change how I though about shooting open sights. So I quit aiming at any specific point. The term "point of aim" is now banished for me and I found a new perspective.

I do align the pistol sights and try to keep as close to perfect sight alignment as possible. Sight alignment is upmost.

As for the sight picture, well I "hold" within an area, not aim. So, "Point of Aim" has been replaced with "Area of Hold or Wobble". That way the trigger can move freely without be obstructed by any fixation on any single point and the focus can remain on the front sight. Aiming implies trying to pick a point, or specific place to put the sights. That does not work for me for pistol. Making my brain understand that as far as the target was concerned, just holding an area until the wobble was the smallest was the key to improving.

Yes, you might say this is just semantics, but a very important one for me and getting my brain trained to focus only on the front sight.

As for my hold area, only sub six works for me since the "black on grey" center hold was too dark to adequately monitor the horizontal position of the front sight in the rear.

Changing how I thought about this really improved my shooting.

On the days that I associate as a pistol shooter, I align in the "B" fashion.

I use sub-six, but I don't hold at a specific ring. I try to achieve a symmetrical image of all three pieces. This is what was recommended at a coaching clinic I took several years ago at the US Olympic training center:

Image

I assume that most of the elite US shooters use this.

I was taught a sub-six hold on the MIT pistol team in 1970 by an ex-air force shooter, Tom McClennan. He held the US air pistol record at one point. It was one of our "secret weapons" that allowed us to out-shoot many of the service academy teams. They were mostly still using 6:00 holds. I'd be surprised if very many people shooting at a high level were still using a 6:00 hold.

As for PR's:

Air Pistol: 575
Free Pistol: 535

I hold sub six as Gwhite describes above, except in center fire events where I use a center hold. I like my front post to appear to be the same size as the black aiming area. I can deal with it appearing smaller, but larger has been a problem for me. I have also been using a U shaped rear on my FP for the past few months, I do like it but it has not added points to my score; so being nonstandard on many pistols I may switch back to the traditional notch to keep everything constant between my pistols.

I shot my personal best match - 562 - with center hold.

15 more years on the retinas and a nasty shoulder injury later, and it doesn't matter. I shoot the same crap scores center, 6 o'clock or sub 6.

sub-6 for standard 10-ring targets with my AP.
I don't know what ring the front sight is on, and I don't care.
I do as Gwhite shows on his post. I just pay attention to even spacing between the front and rear sights and front sight and bottom of the bull.

Precision targets sub 6 o'clock.
Rapidfire lower half of ten ring, below aiming mark.
WA1500 neck hold at 50yds, lower 10 ring other distances.
Replica and fixed sight blackpowder, where ever it needs to hit the ten ring.

What about: 10 AP hold VS. 25-meter Rapid-fire? Consensus says "Sub-6". But does any shooter recommend Sub-6 on 10AP, then take on center-aim in a Rapid Fire string? Just a thought. Please elaborate PRO/CON on this idea.
