wrist pain after shooting 45

Post by little_doodie »

I am fairly new to Bullseye shooting an but I have been developing my 1911 to shoot outdoor matches next summer but I picked up a Herrett grip and every time I have shot with it my wrist has been in substantial pain for almost a week after it. The pain is in the upper wrist just behind the thumb. I don't think 200gr swcl with 4.2 gr BE loads are really hot loads and I never had this pain b4 I put the herrett grip on there.
I like the feel of the grip but I can't imagine the pain I will feel if I shoot a 2700 with it. Thoughts?

To start, the latest Alliant Power Reloaders Guide shows the Max charge for BE with a 200 LSWC at 4.0 gr. I used 4.2 for years until somebody told me. I though the loads felt a little hot. As far as grips go, I have a cabinet full. Some guys like them, most of the top shooters I've seen use the stock grips. I don't know what you do for a living but you either over worked your wrist or under worked it. I heard some say they shot their best after swinging a hammer all week at work. Don't hurt your self, we want you around. I know to many who wore out their elnows and shoulders that either switch hands or quit. Maybe a 22 conversion on your 45 will help. It like shooting your 45 with less recoil and expence. I hope this helps, have fun.

I am not sure where you got the max load to be 4.0 but the online allient guide has reccomended load for BE 200gr lswc as 4.6 gr.
I was thinking of dropping it to 3.8 gr but I was worried about it not cycling. I was thinking some wrist exercises that may help but I think I am going to change the grips back first. I currently shoot a 22 high standard with no issues with that and I have shot several 2700 matches with my 45 without this kind of pain.

Sorry, I stand corrected, I went to the website. The book I have down stairs only list 4.0. Anyways, I use the 4.0 for 50 yards and 3.5 with a 185 gr head at the short line but, I use a frame mount scope. Do you shoot small bore rifle?

wrist pain

Post by hill987 »

I know about pain I have no trigger finger. so gripping is everything, after a 2700 match shooting the 45 for 180 rounds my arm and wrist are hurting. But I use 3.9 bullseye 185swc and 10 lb spring and everything works. you could use 12lb spring if you have all your fingers the gun should cycle ok the other powder is clays 3.5 gr maybe up a gr or two check the book with 185swc. my 45 has a slide mount dot scope with standard grips good luck

We used to load 3.4 BE for iron sight wad guns. Dot sights on the slide our usual load is 3.8-4.o with the right spring. This is the usual starting range. You might then find your own +/- amounts. I used to load dot on slide 185 LSWC with 3.9 BE and 200 with 3.8. Then I said why. Now both are 3.9. The spring is just right to lob the brass out. Not "zing", or dribble out. I had a few lighter loads once where the brass dribbled out and I could feel it tap down the back of my hand.

Hand problems are no joke! I have similar left hand issues (not from shooting). See a hand specialist- it could be arthritus or a tendon injury. If it hurts it is wrong. You may have to change grips, but do not continue to hurt yourself- you could cause permanent damage.

I thought about the spring weight and I may have put my 10# spring in instead of the 12# .... i will check it out and give that a try..
It could be the slide-dot slaming my wrist ?
If so I will also try lighter loads ...3.8 gr BE...
Thanks and I will post results as soon as i try it.

It was the 10#
I put the 12# in and shot about 30 RNDs and felt nothing.
It must have had just enough of a jack hammer effect to irritate my upper wrist joint.
Thanks for all the good ideas.
