CMP Introduces New Competi­tor Handicap System - Many com­petitive shooters who recently looked at competition results posted on the CMP web­site noted new Handicap Results lists that included scores fired by competitors in that match plus a new Handicap number and Handicap Aggregate. Most CMP competi­tors who looked at these new results lists have been wondering what these Handicap numbers are and what they might mean to competitors in CMP sanctioned matches.

2008 Eastern U.S. Junior High­power Clinic and Championship Enrollment Now Open - This event is sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program and Sir Walter Junior Highpower Team with the co-operation and support of the NC National Guard Training Site, North State Shooting Club (NSSC) and the USMC Rifle Team. The Eastern U.S. Junior High­power Clinic and Championship will take place 22-27 June at Camp Butner, North Carolina. The Eastern U.S. Junior High­power Clinic and Championship offers a full week of clinics, coaching and competition for junior service rifle competitors. Juniors attending the clinic will have the opportunity to expand their current level of knowledge, experience and expertise as well as build friendships and camaraderie within the sport.

Oak Ridge Sportsmen’s Association First CMP GSM Clinic of the Year - The Oak Ridge Sportsmen’s Association (ORSA) held its first Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) rifle clinic on Saturday 23 February. The clinic was instructed by CMP-certified instructors. Atten­dance was high with 23 new shooters braving the cool winter weather. The clinic consisted of a 4-hour class covering CMP History, Range Safety, Range Procedures, Pit Operations, Shooting Equipment, Shooting Posi­tions, and Purchasing Rifles and Equipment from the CMP. Along with the new shooters, more than 20 experienced shooters acted as coaches to as­sist the new shooters on the range after the classroom session.

Bushmaster Sponsoring Eastern CMP Games EIC Award. Bushmaster Firearms has agreed to become an award sponsor for the Eastern

CMP Games Special As-Issued M1 Garand EIC Match that will be fired at Camp Butner, North Carolina on Tuesday, 6 May. Bushmaster is providing a DCM-XR Series Competition Rifle to be awarded to the highest ranking competitor in this match who has earned no previous EIC points. This can become an especially appropriate award for the winner of this match since this competitor is likely to be someone who is just beginning the quest to become a Distinguished Rifleman. The Eastern CMP Games begin on Saturday, 3 May, and continue through Tuesday, 6 May. Bushmaster will also provide a similar award rifle to the winner of the Western CMP Games Special As-Issued M1 Garand EIC Match that will take place at the Ben Avery Shooting Range near Phoenix on 14 October 2008.



CMP Director to Speak at North Carolina Lions Event. CMP Director Gary Anderson is scheduled to speak at the Sanford, North Carolina Lion's Club on Thursday evening, 13 March, at 6:30 PM. Ander­son will speak about shooting in the Olympic Games, the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and USA prospects in those Games. The Sanford Lions Club, which meets at the Sanford Fairgrounds, would like to invite anyone in the Central North Carolina area who is interested in hearing about shoot­ing and the Olympic Games to attend the meeting. NYSRPA to conduct two weekends of U.S. Service Rifle SAFS. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association will conduct two service rifle SAFS again this year for the benefit of the NYSRPA Junior Ri­fle Program. There will be two weekends of SAFS beginning on Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 April at Camp Smith in Peekskill, NY and Saturday and Sunday, 26-27 April at Peconic River Sportsman’s Club, Manorville, NY. Anyone interested in the sport of Highpower Shooting and persons interested in improving their shooting skills are encouraged to attend.



Savage Junior Smallbore Rifle Now Available to CMP Clubs. The Savage Mark I-FVT single shot .22 cal. rimfire junior small­bore target rifle can now be purchased by CMP-affiliated clubs, youth camps, 4-H Shooting Sports clubs and BSA organizations for $212.00 each through a special marketing agreement between Savage and the CMP. The rifle is sized for juniors at 5 1/4 pounds, has an adjustable re­ceiver sight and an excellent trigger. Any CMP-affiliated organization with a junior shooting program may apply to the CMP for a purchase eligibility certificate. The $212.00 cost includes sights and shipping. Interested or­ganizations should first download the informational brochure and applica­tion form that is available on the CMP website at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/Savage.pdf. To purchase these rifles, organizations must first apply to the CMP to obtain a certificate of purchase eligibility and instruc­tions to order the rifles. The next CMP Master Instructor Course to train CMP GSM (As-Issued Military Rifle: Garand-Springfield-Military Rifle) Master Instructors now is open for registration. The course will be conducted on 2-3 May at Camp Butner, North Carolina. This workshop is open to all experienced rifle marksmanship instructors and shooters who would like to receive ad­vanced training and be certified as “Master Instructors” to teach CMP-sanctioned Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Clinics at their home clubs. Course instruction and practical work will take place on Fri­day, 2 May. Master Instructor students will then conduct the range training portion of the Eastern CMP Games open clinic that will take place at Camp Butner on Saturday morning, 3 May. The federal law that estab­lished the CMP authorizes the Corporation to sell surplus .30 and .22 cali­ber military rifles, parts and ammunition to qualified U. S. citizens “for marksmanship.” In accordance with this legislative authorization, the CMP sells government-surplus M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, .22 caliber target ri­fles and small quantities of other rifles to qualified purchasers. All net reve­nue from CMP sales operations is used to fund current operations, pro­grams and an endowment to support future programs.



ORPA/FOCP Second Annual Combat Pistol Pop-up Tar­get Shoot. The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association and the Friends of Camp Perry organization will hold their Second Annual Combat Pistol Pop-up Target Shoot on Saturday, 29 March at the Combat Pistol Range on Camp Perry, in Port Clinton, Ohio. Shooting will start at 9:00 AM and con­tinue until 1:00 PM, or until all shooters have fired which ever comes first. Each relay will shoot 40 rounds at 40 targets using pistols firing no larger than .45ACP ammunition. Food and beverages will be available. Registra­tion starts at 8:00 AM. The cost for registering to fire in one relay is $15.00 for non-FOCP members and $10.00 for FOCP members. Shooters may also re-enter to fire in subsequent relays. Third Annual Reading Rifle Junior Highpower Clinic – The Reading Rifle and Revolver Club, Reading, Massachusetts, will hold their Third Annual Junior Highpower Clinic on 3-4 May from 9 AM to 4 PM. Juniors will be coached by Master/High-Master shooters with in-depth posi­tion training and classroom instruction. There will be NO live firing on the first day; all live firing will be done on the 2nd day of the clinic. The clinic is open to all juniors 14 years or older and the cost is $40.00 per junior (lunch included). All equipment is provided for junior participants. Registration is required and applications can be downloaded at www.readinghighpower.com. Applications will be accepted up to April 1st or until all 40 slots are filled. The 2008 CMP Junior Air Rifle Camp schedule and ap­plication forms are posted on the web! The dates for the highly popu­lar summer camps were posted in early January, and applications are al­ready coming in from across the country. Three camps are still open for registration: two camps in Kerrville, Texas (2-6 June & 9-13 June) and Rapid City, SD (16-20 June).
