Eastern Region JROTC Champi­onship - JROTC Rifle Shooting Continues to Grow - There could be no better proof of how much junior rifle shooting is growing in the USA than to see the signs of growth on display at the 2008 Eastern Region JROTC Air Rifle Champion­ship. The Championship was conducted by the CMP on U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit facilities at Fort Benning, Georgia on 15-16 February.

Keep it Steady-The Elements of a Good Prone Position - Part 1-Building the Position - By SPC Matthew Sigrist - Imagine the following scenario: You are at the last stage of fire in the National Tro­phy Individual Match, firing at the 600 yard line in the prone position and every point matters. What should you reflect on as you prepare to shoot this final string? As your eyes cloud from sweat, you realize that all you have to rely on is your experience and knowledge of the fundamentals. During the National Trophy Individual Match, you will fire 60 percent of your shots from the prone position. This article will address the fundamen­tals of a good prone position and help you learn the techniques required to be successful in both the slow and rapid-fire stages of National Match com­petition.

2008 Palmyra Invitational - The 9th Annual Palmyra Invitational took place over 12-13, 19-21 and 26-27 January 2008 at the Palmyra Sportsman’s Association in Palmyra, PA. This smallbore and air rifle match has gained tremendous popularity in recent years attracting some of the top collegiate and junior shooters from across the country.

Another GSM Master Instructor Class Com­pletes Training. The most recent class of CMP GSM (As-Issued Military Ri­fles: Garand, Springfield, Mili­tary Rifle) Master Instructors completed their training in a course at Camp Perry, Ohio on 26-27 January 2008.


29 new Master Instructors were trained in how to teach CMP-sanctioned rifle clinics for new shooters in CMP-affiliated shooting clubs. CMP Direc­tor Gary Anderson and Senior Master Instructor Richard Whiting presented the instruction. Classroom and practical sessions covered how to teach firearms and range safety, range procedures, proper techniques for firing accurate shots and the firing positions used in sanctioned CMP Games matches, prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. Some instructional materi­als for the CMP GSM Rifle Clinic were recently revised. These new slides and notes were previewed at this class. Updated copies of the slides and notes will soon be posted on the CMP website so that Master Instructors who completed earlier training courses can have access to the new mate­rial. The next scheduled CMP GSM Master Instructor class will take place at Camp Butner, North Carolina on 2-3 May 2008. Club rifle instructors who would like to be trained and certified through this program may view the official program and sign-up form for the Camp Butner course on the CMP website at http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/GSMClinic.htm.



ORPA/FOCP Second Annual Combat Pistol Pop-up Tar­get Shoot. The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association and the Friends of Camp Perry organization will hold their Second Annual Combat Pistol Pop-up Target Shoot on Saturday, 29 March at the Combat Pistol Range on Camp Perry, in Port Clinton, Ohio. Shooting will start at 9:00 AM and con­tinue until 1:00 PM, or until all shooters have fired which ever comes first. Each relay will shoot 40 rounds at 40 targets using pistols firing no larger than .45ACP ammunition. Food and beverages will be available. Registra­tion starts at 8:00 AM. The cost for registering to fire in one relay is $15.00 for non-FOCP members and $10.00 for FOCP members. Shooters may also re-enter to fire in subsequent relays. Non-FOCP members may also pay $30.00 for their first registration and become a member of FOCP. If you have questions, please contact Ralph Reichman at 330-468-1287 or email reichmans@juno.com.



The 2008 Camp Riflery ITC dates are now posted on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/CRProgram.htm#ITCs. The goal of the CMP Camp Riflery Instructor Training Course (ITC) is to train individu­als who will work as camp riflery instructors so that they can return to their camps and, with very little assistance, teach rifle marksmanship and oper­ate a camp range safely. Anyone who will work as a camp riflery instructor may enroll in an ITC by using the ITC location and dates listed on the CMP web site. Third Annual Reading Rifle Junior Highpower Clinic – The Reading Rifle and Revolver Club, Reading, Massachusetts, will hold their Third Annual Junior Highpower Clinic on 3-4 May from 9 AM to 4 PM. Juniors will be coached by Master/High-Master shooters with in-depth posi­tion training and classroom instruction. There will be NO live firing on the first day; all live firing will be done on the 2nd day of the clinic. The clinic is open to all juniors 14 years or older and the cost is $40.00 per junior (lunch included). All equipment is provided for junior participants. Registration is required and applications can be downloaded at www.readinghighpower.com. Applications will be accepted up to April 1st or until all 40 slots are filled. Regulations and Applications for the 2008-2009 CMP College Scholarships are now posted on the CMP website. The $1000 schol­arship is available to high school seniors and college underclassmen who excel in rifle marksmanship and who are enrolled in Army, Navy, or Marine Corps JROTC or ROTC programs. U. S. Army Junior Open Air Rifle Championship En­tries Open. Junior shooting clubs and JROTC units have until 1 March (deadline extended) to make entries and order targets for the State Cham­pionship Postal Phase of this annual junior air rifle competition and until 15 March to fire and return their targets. Entry fees are just $5 per shooter and there are no additional team fees. There are team and individual events for three-position sporter air rifle and standing position precision air rifle. Awards will be given in every state with three or more teams or indi­viduals. In 2007, 240 teams and over 1,700 individual juniors participated in the State Championship Postal Phase that also determined the teams that were invited to the shoulder-to-shoulder National Championship at Fort Benning in August. 2008 CMP Junior Air Rifle Camps. The dates for the highly popular summer camps were posted in early January, and applications are already coming in from across the country. Three camps are already full with waiting lists. If you would like to attend a CMP camp this summer, it is important to submit your applications as soon as possible. CMP Eastern Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches - The second annual CMP Eastern Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches are set to take place at Camp Butner, NC on 3-11 May 2008. The event features both clinics and competitions and is hosted by North State Shooting Club (NSSC) and the North Carolina Army National Guard at Camp Butner, NC.
