RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - The U.S. Shooting Team earned three additional medals July 16 at the 2007 Pan- American Games to bring its total medal count to seven. The competition is taking place at the Deodoro Sports Complex and will run through July 21.
The U.S. started out strong by taking the number one and two positions on the medal stand in the Men's 50 Meter Free Pistol event.
Jason Turner of Rochester, N.Y., took home the Gold Medal as well as secured an Olympic Quota Slot with his top finish. Sgt. 1st Class Daryl L. Szarenski of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit of Fort Benning, Ga., finished the event in the Silver Medal position.
"We had good competition here. We started off rocky but worked our way to the top," Turner said after his victory. "I have enjoyed the experience here. The facility is world class and is one of the best international ranges."
The third medal of the day came in the Men's Trap. Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Bret E. Erickson claimed a Silver Medal behind Argentina's Juan Carlos Dasque. Canada's Giuseppe di Salvatore snagged the Bronze Medal.
On the women's side, three-time Olympian Army Reserve Staff Sgt.
Elizabeth Callahan finished in seventh place in the Women's 10 Meter Air Pistol. The crown was won by Canada's Avianna Chao.
July 17 will prove to be another busy day at the shooting range, as finals competition will take place in the Men's 50 Meter Free Rifle Prone, the Women's Trap and Men's 10 Meter Air Pistol.
