I did of course forget to mention that he won Bronze medals in both Free Pistol and Standard Pistol at the World Championships in 1982.

The next really big match was the Olympics in 1984. It would have been exremely hard for any Russian to win a medal there as they did not attend.

In the 1968 Olympics Bob Beamon long jumped 29 feet 2.5 inches in the Olympic Games. This was almost 2 feet longer than anyone had ever jumped anywhere or anytime. It took 23 years for this record to be broken and no one really got close to it for about 20 years. Sports Illustrted notes this as one of their top 5 sports achievements of the 20th century. So, I find it very plausible that Melentiev could have shot the score he did. The Olympics have and will continue to bring out unprecedented performances. This is one of the motivations I use in my shooting.

Other points which were in Melentiev's favour was that he was shooting in his own country, he was competing at a facility he probably knew intimately, his own country was hosting the Olympics, his own language would have been the primary language being spoken around him and a large number of competitors from other countries were absent. These factors combined could have helped ease nerves and improve psychological performance to the point where it enabled him to shoot extraordinarily well on the day.
