RUNNING TARGET
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT BENNING, Ga.— Major Mike Anti won his second 2004 USA Shooting National Championship title Wednesday as he dominated the men’s three-position rifle event at Fort Benning’s Pool Ranges.

Anti, who won a spot to this summer’s Olympic Games in both men’s prone and three-position a month ago, was the only Olympic team member competing at this year’s Nationals. Traveling home from the Milan World Cup just days before his events were set to begin made this an exhausting month for the three-time Olympian.

Nevertheless, after Anti (Fort Benning, Ga.) successfully defended his National Championship in prone on Sunday, he set his sights on the men’s three-position event and never looked back. Anti hit an impressive two-day total of 2,441.3 to clinch his second gold medal of the match.

Nineteen-year-old Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas) was the silver medalist in men’s three-position, finishing with a total of 2,435.0. Rawlings shot the best final of the day and soared to over 18 points ahead of bronze medalist, 22-year-old Joseph Hein (Mason, Mich.). Both Hein and Rawlings shoot for the nationally renowned rifle team at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Rawlings also swept the junior category, finishing with a 2,435.9, 25 points above Joseph Hall (Carrollton, Ga.). Tom Csenge rounded out the top-three juniors in this event with a 2,385.6.

This marks the closing event of this year’s Pistol, Rifle and Running Target National Championships. Look for results in early July from the Shotgun National Championships, held in Colorado Springs, Colo.
