2004 PISTOL, RIFLE and RUNNING TARGET
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT BENNING, Ga.— Sarah Bergman won her first National Championship Sunday in women’s air rifle at the Fort Benning Pool Ranges.
Bergman, a shooter with the U.S. Naval Academy, beat her next closest competitor by over four points in the two-day event. University of Alaska-Fairbanks shooter, Jamie Beyerle was the runner-up in the women’s match, scoring an 887.6, but won the junior women’s competition with an 887.9 total score. Amber Darland, UAF alum, came in third and rounded out the top-three women’s finalists with an 884.6.
On the 50m range, men’s prone drew to a close, with Major Mike Anti clinching the top spot. Anti double-qualified for the 2004 Olympics in both men’s prone and men’s three-position just last month. Anti was the only U.S. Olympian to travel back from the Milan World Cup and compete at this year’s Nationals. It was an effort that no doubt paid off, as Anti defended his National Championship title and hopes to continue his domination with a win in the three-position event that starts on Tuesday.
But it wasn’t as if Anti walked away with this win. Eighteen-year-old, Joseph Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) came up only one-tenth of a point short from forcing Anti into a shoot-off, while James Hall, 20, who was trailing dangerously close, finished in third. And the X on Anti’s back only gets bigger as he trains for his next event.
After that extremely tight final, Joseph Hall, seemingly unfazed, turned around to pick up the junior prone win. Matthew Rawlings finished second in the junior category, while Cody Rutter took the bronze.
Pistol athletes concluded their last two National Championship events on the 25m range today. Center fire and standard pistol didn’t prove much of a shock, however, as 2004 rapid fire champion, Keith Sanderson (San Antonio, Texas), won the standard event, while the 2004 air and free pistol National Champion, Staff Sgt. John Ennis took home his third gold medal of the match in center fire. Ennis pretty much dominated at this competition, winning silver medals in the events the two events he didn’t win gold.
