2004 PISTOL, RIFLE and RUNNING TARGET
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT BENNING, Ga.—The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit swept USA Shooting’s Running Target National Championships Saturday, at the Fort Benning Pool ranges. USAMU athletes took home a total of six medals from the two events contested.

However, this will be the last time the USAMU brings a running target team to the USA Shooting National Championships (USANC). Since the men’s 10m 30+30 running target event will be cut from the Olympic lineup after 2004--thus eliminating the entire running target discipline from the Olympic Games--the USAMU has decided to terminate its team, leaving the current running target athletes to disperse among other shooting events of their choice.

This year marked Staff Sgt. Armando Ayala’s third-straight win at the USANC in the men’s 10m 30+30 running target event. Ayala (Columbus, Ga.) blew by the competition Friday, finishing with a 1,225.7 total score. He also took home the gold medal from the men’s mixed running target event, which finished up today.

Spc. Hank Gray made a good showing to place second in both events, finishing with a 1,206.4 in 10m 30+30 and a 379 in mixed. Staff Sgt. Christopher Hatcher rounded out the top-three, shooting a 1,183.6 in 30 + 30, while hitting a 361 to clinch bronze in mixed.
