Sniper School Comes to Iraq
15 APRIL 2004


For the first time since 1968, a sniper school was held on foreign soil during combat. The National Guard Marksmanship Training Center sent the cadre of its sniper course instructors to northern Iraq to train the soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in skills that have provided to be useful during combat operations.

See the Guns of the National Matches Display at the NRA Convention


The CMP and Ohio Gun Collectors Association are again collaborat­ing to recreate the highly acclaimed “Guns of the National Matches” display that was shown at Camp Perry throughout the 2003 National Matches. This time, the display of 100 years of guns, trophies and memorabilia that were used in the National Matches will be on view in the gun collector displays at the NRA Convention in Pittsburgh. Any­one who plans to go to the NRA Convention this week is encouraged to see the gun collectors displays and check out the Guns of the Na­tional Matches.

USOC Program: FLAME


USOC has a program called FLAME (Finding Leaders Among Minori­ties Everywhere) for minority kids ages 13-18 with strong academics and community involvement. This enrichment program will include a sponsored trip to the U.S. Olympic Training Center July 7-11 this sum­mer. The applications and more information are available at http://www.usolympicteam.com/flame/. The application deadline is April 23rd.



The 2004 National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle Championship was a great success this year.


A total of 156 teams and 1,139 individuals participated in this event. Elisha LaFond of Spokane Jr Rifle Club, WA placed first in the Precision Individual Event with a 392 and Tyler Burke of La Cueva HS, NM, won the top Sporter Individual Event with a score of 283. The La Cueva HS team was the top Sporter Team with their score of 1103. Team members were Burke, Tyler Gross, Artiom Reynolds and Chris Kirby. The top Precision team was Palmyra Jr. Rifle Team, PA with a team score of 1517. This team consisted of Cody Rutter, Leslie Angeli, Brad Stepp and Kirsten Weiss. The top ten state champion sporter and top ten state champion precision teams, after the new shooter-old shooter rule is applied, will be invited to compete in the National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle Tournament at Camp Robinson, Arkansas on 9-12 June. Those invitations will be announced at the end of April when results become final.
