2004 FINAL OLYMPIC SHOTGUN TEAM TRIALS

FORT BENNING, Ga. – Men’s double trap is going to be a race to the finish as five men all appear to be within reaching distance of making the 2004 Olympic Team. Glenn Eller (Houston, Texas) stepped it up to take a lead over U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s, Sgt. 1st class Bret Erickson (Buena Vista, Ga.), at the Fort Benning Hook range on Monday. Jeff Holguin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) closes in on the top-two spots, while Joshua Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) and USAMU’s Sgt. William Keever (Phenix City, Ala.) are not far behind.

Erickson led the double trap competition by a margin of two targets after the Fall Olympic Selection, but has already secured a spot on the Olympic Team in men’s trap. “And now that the pressure is off,” Erickson said, “I’m just going to go out there and have fun.” Erickson could, if he qualifies, compete in both events this summer. But with the competition closing in, may not get the option.

Eller took advantage of Erickson’s nonchalant attitude and grabbed a three-target lead with a first-day score of 128. Holguin made a huge showing by hitting 131, and now stands four targets down from making the squad. Richmond and Keever are also within striking distance, however, Richmond fell one position-- shooting a 122 first-day score-- while Keever jumped up a few spots-- scoring a 130. Richmond and Keever are within seven and nine points, respectively, of making it on the Team heading to Athens this summer.

In women’s double trap, no one has made a move to knock two-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) out of the lead. USAMU’s Staff Sgt. Joetta Dement, of Seale, Ala., who was involved in a heartbreaking loss just two days ago in the women’s trap event, has now fallen 23 targets behind Rhode in double trap. Dement is currently in second-place, and looks to remain an alternate in both events.
