Jacob Family Shootout and a Moschetti Win Concludes 2017 NJOSC

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (June 16, 2017)
Jacenta Jacob and Nic Moschetti both claimed skeet titles in dramatic sudden-death fashion on the final day of the 2017 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) taking place just outside of Colorado Springs at USA Shooting’s International Shotgun Park.

It was all in the family for 15-year-old Jacenta (Rochester, Michigan) who narrowly edged her older sister Katie in a thrilling final to claim her first Junior Olympic title. Both sisters shot to a tie with 54 hit targets following a 60-shot final, and entered into a sudden-death matchup - increasing the drama significantly. After shooting the target pair out of order in the fourth-round of the sudden-death match, the reigning JO champion, Katie, dropped to second only one target behind her sister to finish with the silver.Image

“Winning Junior Olympics is one of the best things to ever happen to me,” Jacenta exclaimed. “It was a total experience of excitement; the crowd was clapping and it’s something you just can’t stop smiling about.”

Moschetti (Broomfield, Colorado) claimed his first Junior Olympic title after being the runner-up in 2016, but only after surviving a sudden-death shootout with Eli Christman (Hixson, Tennessee). As a multi-time medalist at the Junior Olympics, the Lindenwood University product Moschetti looks forward to seeing what his next 125 targets hold at this summer’s USA Shooting National Shotgun Championships, July 8-17.Image

“It’s always been a dream of mine to win Junior Olympics, especially after watching all of my friends win during past years” Moschetti expressed. “Going into the shoot-off, knowing it was going to come down to who would miss targets was exciting. It makes it so much sweeter to win after four targets in the shoot-off.”

After a world-class qualification of 125/125, Elijah Ellis (College Station, Texas) settled for bronze for his second year in a row - leaving this year’s Junior Olympics with the most points towards qualifying for the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Championships in Moscow, Russia. Sam Simonton (Gainesville, Georgia), a new Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center resident claimed the bronze on the Women’s side, finishing with a 44 in the final.

The allure of a junior podium is always strong, but the opportunity to represent Team USA at the upcoming International Shooting Sport Federations (ISSF) Shotgun World Championships is of primary importance. This year’s NJOSC is the first part of the selection for the Junior World Team. Selection combines the results from NJOSC and the first course of fire during the upcoming USA Shooting National Championships.

The top-two athletes in Men’s and Women’s Skeet at NJOSC also earn appointments to the National Junior Team. The third and fourth place finishers earn Junior Squad status.

In the J3 (14 years and younger) age division, 12-year-old Benjamin Keller (Johnstown, Colorado) claimed the gold over John Cantu (Victoria, Texas) by one target. Finishing with the J3 bronze was Jordan Sapp (Queen Creek, Arizona). For the women, Alishia Layne (Columbia, Tennessee) claimed the sole spot on the podium with gold. In the men’s J2 age division, Alexander Ahlin (Bamberg, South Carolina) took the top place on the podium after securing a five-target lead over Zeth Smith (Waller, Texas). Keaton Little (Leonard, Michigan) settled for J2 bronze with 112 targets. For the women, Austen Smith (Keller, Texas) claimed J2 gold with an outstanding 122/125, which put her into the final in the first position. Following Smith was a pair of Wasilla, Alaska natives in Jasmine Otis for silver and Meghan Thompson for bronze.

More than 220 athletes from across the country came to Colorado Springs to compete in Trap and Skeet at this year’s NJOSC. Next up for shotgun athletes is the USA Shooting National Championships July 8-17 also in Colorado Springs.
