How to quiet 22 lr rifle, muzzle in box??

Neighbors would like me to quiet down my 22 lr when I shoot 100 yds. off bench. One option I've read is to have muzzle inside an insulated box. Opening big enough to sight thru box or tube. Box about 2 feet long. Any other ideas or suggestions re. insulation or ways to set this up? How far muzzle inside box, how long box. Box inside would have to be around 6 inches to allow for scope to have clear view. How much insulation thickness??

Shooting for extreme accuracy so attaching a silencer to barrel is not what I need.

Section of culvert with tyres at either end.

Yup, shoot through a row of old tyres (through the middle of them), poke the muzzle in as far as you can comfortably. Big tyres that fit small rims the best option, larger expansion chambers. I heard that the IRA used this system.

That's tires for those that don't speak propa English...

How about a piece of Sonotube, the fiberboard concrete form, limed with Fiberglas insulation? I'm about to make one about 18 " in diameter and maybe 5 ft long. The insulation would be maybe 3 inch thick non-covered Fiberglas. I may use just cardboard to start.

BTW you can download lots of decibel meter aps but I don't know if they work well for short, loud sounds.

Keep us posted on success.

I think I'll start out trying the 18" pipe idea, easier to try then the tires. Thanks to all for input.

You just reminded me of something I saw in Buochs, Switzerland.

300m Rifle Match. The shooters shoot through sound dampening, deadening, absorbing, etc tubes. I don't know what material they were using.

Shooters are in a building several meters above the ground. Targets are on top of another building. In between the shooters and the targets are some other buildings, a parking lot and a street open to traffic with cars, trucks, and bicyclists passing.

Just another day in Switzerland.

Wow!! This would never fly here in the US. Way too many regulators would put the brakes on this. I can almost hear the personal injury attorneys salivating as they line up.

18 USC § 921(a):
(24) The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.
26 C.F.R. § 478.11 states the same thing again pretty much.

NFA handbook has a bit more information: § 2.1.7 NFA Handbook Chapter 2.

In Ohio, at least, it takes the signature of one's local Sheriff, some ATF paperwork, and $200 to possess, and use a silencer. It is not a difficult task to accomplish for honest, law abiding, citizens:

Follow the law, as written, and all is good.

So, would shooting through a row of tires count as shooting a "suppressed" firearm, or must the device actually be attached to the firearm?

Reading these to include sound-deadening material would be beyond ludicrous. If so interpreted, any shooting range with any sort of insulation, carpet, or other sound-deadening material in its booths or on its walls would be subject to NFA restrictions. I think you'd be hard-pressed to apply NFA regs to any device that wasn't attached to a firearm. Have you got any case law indicating otherwise?

The Swiss do it. It is clearly a good idea. You could get really fancy and fit some lights in there to light up your sights. 12V led strips would work with a motorbike battery.

As far as the law goes it would be an extremely long bow to draw to connect the environment with the NFA.

I caught a video on YouTube of a similar range which was baffled off and could only shoot prone with the cone of fire but it was over a main arterial route near Berne. Hard case.

There was another one where they had a historical shoot near Neufchâtel which no such controls, in a paddock with several hundred shooters present with a village in the cone of fire. :-D

BlokeontheRange was the channel.

The foam in the Swiss tubes looks like egg crate urethane sound deadening material. It might be fine but I was thinking Fiberglas because it isn't flamable.

The whole idea that a sound deadening 'room' or enclosure would run counter to the NFA is really a stretch. What about indoor ranges that have sound deadening walls and doors?

BTW, what is a portable firearm or the opposite, a non-portable firearm?

The general idea is that if its not mounted to the firearm, then the ATF has no intrest in regulating it.

As a suppressor owner, I can say for certain that there is great utility in owning and using such a device. It pains me the see many sanctioning bodies ruling against their use.

Further, its been implied in this thread that use of a suppressor is not appropriate on a precision rifle, which is certainly false. A properly constructed suppressor will not harm a firearms accuracy, and in many cases will improve it.

How does it improve accuracy, out of curiosity? I know about the legal side but not the practical, and I'm interested in it.
