Air Rifle Scholarships

Post by ArcherDash »

Is it an actual thing? I've never heard about colleges having shooting teams.
I'm not sure If I'm a good enough shot to really get in, I was shooting a decent 240 in high school, I've dropped to a 198 from lack of shooting an inferior equipment.
Anyone know anything?

There are about 33 NCAA Air/Smallbore rifle teams and of those around 13 are Division 1 Schools, which means they can give out 3.5 scholarships I think a year. Pistol and shotgun are not NCAA sports, but are club sports. However, there are a small number of colleges/universities such as Ohio State (for pistol) that give out scholarships. The amount of scholarships given out for different sports is different. For example I could be wrong, but I think football is allowed maybe 19. The scholarships are given out anywhere from say a quarter to a full scholarship, but I understand full scholarships are given out sparingly. The full ride scholarships are generally reserved for those shooters on top of their game. The coaches I have talked to at the collegiate level first look at your grades, ACT/SAT scores, and then your shooting record. There is also the possibility that you can come as a walk on and essentially they get to try you for a period of time to see if you are good enough for the team and maybe a scholarship. A few schools have more then one team, but their traveling team are usually the ones that are getting the scholarship money. Nevada Reno University used to have four teams (they may still have four just haven't kept up to date on the team), but only their travel team gets scholarship money. This is my understanding on how it generally works. If you really want to find out just go to the NCAA website or go to your school counselor they should have the answers. One thing you may need to do is register with the NCAA so you can find out that you are getting all the necessary classes to be eligible to participate with one of the NCAA sports.

You said you already graduated, so you can't shoot on a college team unless you go back to that school and still eligible for NCAA sports.

Graduated high school or college?

Jacksonville is currently ranked number 14 in the nation. It is hard to get a scholarship to the really good teams. Many schools, however, have a varsity team and a club team. Kentucky and WVU come to mind. Many other colleges like Clemson field a club team only and the NRA hosts a National Championship for those schools.

The Collegiate Rifle Coaches Assoc. might be a place to start.

Good luck with your shooting.
