10m air pistol velocity

Post by xman1981 »

What is the recommended velocity of a pellet for 10m air pistol. With what velocity shoots world class on the olimpic game?

Velocity is typically around 500fps. Sometimes a little more or less. My Hammerli says it shoots near 480fps. Other manufacturers specify other velocities but centering around 500fps.

There is no magic number, in short.
It is observed that there will be nodes of performance for any given barrel, and projectile; across a given speed range.

The only way to really know what works (and what does not) is with empirical evidence.

I have often said (many, many times), "Test 'em yourself."

So why am I being bothered with this crap?

But to answer the original post, "Why in hell would you care?"

Basically, you are looking for a CONSISTENT velocity fast enough to make nice clean holes in the target and not effect the aim point as it travels thru the barrel. This is typically around 500fps as I mentioned earlier. Take the IZH-46. The original version had a muzzle velocity of around 470 fps. The IZH-46M had a longer compression cylinder that added an additional 60fps. Everything else about the pistol remained the same. The IZH-46 has won several medals. I think it even took a silver in one of the Olympics. But the main point is consistency in velocity and fast enough to make clean holes. If you accomplish these two things your score will be up to you, not the pistol.

I think my FWB 65 chrono'ed around 430 fps or so.

Morini was right at 500.

Just chronographed two air pistols today. Using 7.9 grain pellets my FWB 65 varied between 418 and 433 fps over ten shots, and my Steyr EVO 10's range was 537 to 551 fps.

I just chronigraphed my Hammerli today. It was very close to what the book said. It measured between 482 and 486 fps.
