Getting Started 50m Prone Rifle Central Ohio?

Post by Totten02 »

I am new to smallbore 50m prone shooting and I am trying to locate training, events, matches, clubs, and gun ranges that allow prone shooting. I am also looking general information such as where to buy gear, rifle parts, to get started in this sport in the central Ohio region. I am transitioning from service rifle & pistol shooting and so far finding information about this sport has been an uphill battle. Simple things like obtaining a rifle, and figuring out where to get gear have been insanely harder than any other style of shooting. I have searched USA Shooting, CMP, and NRA looking for training and events and have had little luck. ISSF has been useful for rules and target specs. Basically as it stands I have managed to get a KK-300, a bunch of 50m prone targets, and an ISSF rule book. That's it. So any information this forum can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Call Carl or Todd at Champion Shooters; they should be able to help with club and match information. If you don't mind driving, there is an active group of prone shooters near Hamilton Ohio that shoot conventional outdoor prone Monday evenings during the summer, and indoor 50 foot prone early Monday afternoons during the winter. There were groups that shot in Middletown and Lima Ohio; but I haven't shot their matches in 10 years.

As patriot said, Champion Shooters Supply is the Ohio source you are looking for just out side of Columbus. http://www.championshooters.com. They can outfit you "Soup to Nuts".

Not much International 50 meter prone here in Ohio, but plenty of NRA conventional prone and 3-position. Rick Sarver is the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association Adult Smallbore director and can put you on the mailing list for both outdoor prone and indoor 3-P upcoming matches - adult_smallbore@orpa.net.

Rick also runs the Central Ohio Rifle League. Monthly indoor 3-p matches are held at The Ohio State University stating in October. He is working with Cardinal Shooting Center to setup a smallbore range to host the Ohio NRA regional 3200 prone, Ohio State Prone Championships as well as monthly league matches.

Here is a link to the latest issue of ORPA's Gunsmoke news letter. Page 7 has the results of the 2016 Ohio 3200 and page 19 is the calendar of events around Ohio- http://www.orpa.net/gunsmoke/2016augsepgunsmoke.pdf

Miami Rifle and Pistol Club may be your closest club that offers smallbore prone matches a couple of times a month. http://miamirifle-pistol.org/nra_small_bore.php
Lima Sabers also offers smallbore prone and 3-p. http://www.limasabres.com/default/Smallbore.html

Hope to see you at one of Ohio events!
