Junior shooting club makes the local paper

Post by Jay V »

This is a link to the story about the AIAC Juniors that appeared Saturday July 3rd on the front page of the Neighbor section of the Daily Herald in the Arlington Heights, IL, area. The printed article also included a large photo of Matthew Kou and Hannah McHugh on the firing line, and in some areas a photo of 2000 Olympian Michael Douglass speaking to the group.

We were very pleased to have a favorable article written about our club in the local (Chicago metro) newspaper. Unlike some areas, most of the "shooting articles" written in this area don't have anything to do with competition (if you know what I mean). In general the media in this area is anti-gun, so it was nice to have something positive written about the shooting sports.

Though it doesn't mention it, one of the reasons that 2000 Olympian Michael Douglass stopped by was to do some coaching with our new air pistol team. We need to constantly remind people that what we do is an Olympic sport - and should be viewed in the same way as archery, swimming, track, etc.

What a pleasant surprise it was to pull the Neighbor section out of the Herald and see AIR RIFLES! That alone was worth the cost of subscribing.

Good work! How did you interest the paper to run an article? Had you been in previous correspondence with them, or just cold called?

We were lucky enough to have Michael Douglass (2000 Olympian - AP) stop by on a short trip back home. With his visit and out trip to the Junior Olympics it made an interesting enough story to run I guess. I just called the editor and sent some press releases and other info about the club.
