Spain Ready for Biggest IPC Shooting World Cup Ever
Preparations are under way in the Spanish city of Alicante for the biggest ever International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting World Cup.

Taking place from 4-8 May on the Alicante Shooting Range, the World Cup will see more than 240 athletes from 46 countries competing for 12 direct qualification slots for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Furthermore, athletes will be able to achieve the Minimum Qualification Standards for the London Games in Alicante.

The athletes will compete in air rifle and pistol and rifle and pistol events over 10m, 25m and 50m distances. The programme in Alicante consists of the same events as included in the London 2012 Paralympic Games programme.

The local organizing committee (LOC) has signed a collaboration agreement with the Miguel Hernandez University in Alicante to provide sport massage to all shooters participating in the World Cup through physiotherapy students. The Fundacion Jorge Alio supports the LOC by conducting free professional checks of visual acuity of 25 shooters.

Athena Charitaki, IPC Shooting Sport Manager, said: “The LOC is doing an excellent job in preparing this Shooting World Cup.

“It will be the biggest we have ever had and we are very happy with the way the sport is developing.”

At the London 2012 Paralympic Games there will be 140 athletes competing in 12 medal events. Each National Paralympic Committee (NPC) can be allocated a maximum of five places for athletes through the Direct Qualification Method. To be eligible for selection by an NPC, each athlete must be licensed, classified and have achieved the Minimum Qualification Standard at least twice in an IPC recognized competition.
