Favorite Bullet

Post by Thedrifter »

Hey guys, Long time rifle shooter looking for advice on bullets.

This would be for 9mm 1911;

Just curious to know what the preferred style and weights might be for target shooting. I ordered some Berry 9mm 124g HBRN because they were a good price. Are the flat nose popular for target shooting? My end goal would be to start playing the EIC pistol game.

Lots of loading advice around the web but I'm looking for more specific to this sport.

I'VE DONE A LOT OF RANSOM REST TESTING IN 9MM. OF COURSE AT 50YDS. SEVERAL DIFFERENT ROCK RIVER 1911'S AND A FEW BERETTA'S, BOTH TONY KID AND DAVID SAMS VERSIONS. S&W PPC9'S. SEVERAL DIFFERENT BARRELS, KKM 1-32, KART 1-16, BARSTO AND S&W 1-18(IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY)

IN ALL GUNS I'VE FOUND THE FOLLOWING IN RANK MOST ACCURATE ON TOP.
1. HORNADY 115 GR XTP
2. HORNADY 124 GR XTP
3. HORNADY 121 GR HAP
4. HORNADY 115 GR HAP
5&6 TIED SIERRA 115GR JHP , ZERO 115GR JHP CONICAL DESIGN
(WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF EXCEPTIONS, SOME S&W PREFER THE 147 GR HORNADY XTP)

THAT BEING SAID THE DIFFERENCE FROM THE MOST ACCURATE #1 TO #6 IS ONLY ABOUT A HALF AN INCH AT 50 YDS.

POWDER CHOICE??
1. VV330 5.0GR
2. VV320 4.8GR
3. WSF 5.3GR

147 JHP WAS 4.2GR VV330, OR 4.0 WSF VERY SOFT SHOOTING, BOTH UNDER 2 INCHS AT 50YDS.
I TRIED POWER PISTOL IT WAS ACCURATE BUT IN MY RRA GUNS AT ABOUT 100RDS THE GROUP REALLY OPENED UP.
I KNOW THERE ARE OTHERS BUT I STOPPED LOOKING AFTER THESE COMBOS GAVE GREAT RESULTS.

I HAVE NEVER FOUND PLATED BULLETS TO GROUP AT 50 YDS . HARDLY HELD BLACK ON A CENTER. NOW THE TOP BULLET AND POWDER COMBO IS EASILY 1 INCH AT 50YDS.
NEW BRASS AT 50YDS WAS BEST, ROLL SIZED BRASS AT 50 YDS ADDED HALF INCH TO GROUPS, ANY HODGE PODGE BRASS ON THE SHORT LINE.
HOPE THIS HELPS. JP

Yep, Ill have to try some Hornady bullets... Bullseye Powder is what i have right now, got it for a good deal, and Winchester primers at the local gun store.

I did have great luck with the wilson ammo shooting 115g HAP's but it also had some feed issues

IIRC, EIC requires FMJ/TMJ (I'm guessing plated is ok). You might want to double check if hollowpoints like the Hornady XTPs are legal first.

XTPs are perfectly legal as are HAPs and Noslers. They are "jacketed hollow points."

what's not legal is a 9mm 1911 for an EIC.

I do believe the rules have changed, the CMP does now allow 9mm 1911 as well as glocks and some other Springfield and S&W and others

6.2.3

a) U. S. Government or Colt M1911 Service Pistols or commercial versions of the same type (M1911). These pistols may be chambered for any cartridge with a bore diameter not less than 9mm and not greater than .45” and have a barrel length not greater than 5.100”.

I am very pleased with my loads of 115gr XTP's over 4.8gr of VV N340 in my Beretta 92FS with 1/32 KKM slow twist barrel.

YMMV
