Starting a new club

Post by E. Thompson »

Hello, we have a air rifle club here at Edinboro University of PA. I have been with the club for a short while and all we do is show up and shoot at a few targets. I would like to focus the club to be more competitive and to shoot with other colleges and/or universities. What is required for our club to shooting with others? I tried a search for other schools in our area and found none. What is involved with setting up postal matches? What about training and equipment? I need any and all help. Thanks to all. : Hello, we have a air rifle club here at Edinboro University of PA. (snip) I tried a search for other schools in our area and found none.

Look at - http://www.nrahq.org/compete/coldir.asp or email collegiate@nrahq.org for college shooting info. There is a lot more info on the nrahq.org site also.
Martin Edmondson (martin.edmondson@usashooting.org) at USA Shooting may also be able to help you.
If your club is not affiliated with the NRA, USA Shooting, CMP, and your state NRA affiliate, I would consider doing it also. Get to know your NRA Field Rep and CMP State Junior Director. They can get you going, and can help with training and funding to expand if needed.
We normally travel about 100 mi to compete, but occasionally with some looking around you can find smaller less active groups in the area to compete against on a club level. You may find a club but not a school team in your area.
The NRA, USA Shooting, and the CMP (www.odcmp.com)have club locators on their web sites that may help.

I believe Duquesne has a program as do OSU, Xavier and U. of Akron in Ohio. I think Canisius has a club.

I work for NRA's Collegiate and School Programs Department. We frequently help schools create a competitive shooting program in any discipline. For more information on what we do or how we can help you, please contact me at 703-267-1469 or by e-mailing EPoole@nrahq.org. Also, feel free to checkout our website at http://www.nrahq.org/compete/coldir.asp and view the interactive collegiate shooting directory! Good luck!

Thanks. I have future articles expected to debut in American Rifleman throughout the course of 2004 regarding my experience in Iraq. Please enjoy and feel free to open a discussion.
