USAMU to give free shooting clinics at Fort Benning

Post by USAMU »

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, Accessions Support Brigade

FORT BENNING, Ga. - The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit's International Rifle Team will host a free intermediate- and advanced-level smallbore and air rifle clinic at Pool Range Aug. 9 to 13 for adults and junior shooters. Each applicant must be a member of an organized club, such as the National Rifle Association, USA Shooting, Boy Scouts, 4-H Club, ROTC/JROTC, or high school/college shooting teams. Everyone must sign a range safety waiver and guardians must have a power of attorney to sign the safety waiver for junior shooters. Everyone should have proper medical insurance paperwork on hand in case of an emergency. Participants must provide their own transportation, lodging, meals, rifles, ammunition and equipment, as well as adult supervision for juniors, during this clinic. Each shooter is encouraged to bring a minimum of 750 match-grade .22-caliber ammunition and 500 .177-caliber air rifle pellets. The Army Marksmanship Unit will provide instructors, range space and use of the electronic target systems. Because there will be no overnight equipment storage area, competitors must remove all their personal items from the range at the end of the day and will be responsible for securing their own equipment and rifles. Anyone wanting to participate can mail requests by June 30 to USAMU International Rifle Coach Richard Hawkins at U.S. Army International Rifle Team, 7031 Bills St., Building 243, Fort Benning, Ga., 31905-3103, or e-mail Richard.Hawkins@USAREC.Army.mil, (706) 545-2343 or fax (706) 545-9068. Following the clinic, the USAMU will host an Air Rifle and 50-Meter Three Position shooting competition Aug. 13 to 15. The entry fee is $25 for adults and $10 for Juniors. Participants should request entry forms from Hawkins no later than July 30.
(Formed in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to raise the standards of marksmanship throughout the U.S. Army, the Army Marksmanship Unit is assigned to the Accessions Support Brigade of Fort Knox, Ky., which is under U.S. Army Accessions Command, of Fort Monroe, Va. Accessions Command is charged with overseeing recruiting and training of the Army's enlisted Soldiers and officers. The Marksmanship Unit trains its Soldiers to win competitions and enhances combat readiness through train-the-trainer clinics, research and development. The world-class Soldier-athletes of the USAMU also promote the Army and assist recruiters in attracting young Americans to enlist in the Army. All you have to do is contact the USAMU and ask to be included on their clinic schedule. They do these mainly in the winter, and we have had several in the NW over the years. Just ask.
