Kind of late but I'll add in: Weight is the rifle all ready to go but without mags. Trigger is all personal preference and with a glove on it is best to not get too technical. I have my trigger right at 500 gr. and bring a screwdriver to tech to account for the weight change with temperature. I fail...

By rule, optical magnification is not allowed. Practically, having anything to catch a snowflake or condense moisture is not good. Very often snow flakes get into the sights and the clearing method is to blow them out. Sometimes the humidity in breath condenses on the flake and can foul the sight pi...

The big knock on these rifles are the sights. The rifle looks like a restocked FVT. The Williams sights use a set screw to lock everything into place. Backing out the set screw is not very race ready as it's slow. If you leave the screw loose to allow fir in race adjustments the sights wander more t...

Temperature specific ammo makes a huge difference regardless of the brand. I use Fiocchi SM340 which is speced for cold temps. The ammo is also lubed with Teflon so it doesn't become hard in the cold and I don't spend a lot of time wiping off the lube to keep it from gacking up the works. I train wi...

I have used both the butt and forestock mag holders and the forestock is is the way to go. The mags up front are easier to see, faster to load since they are closer to the well; are near the support hand so the leverage is less when you inevitably move the rifle. This stability reduces the fumbling ...

The weight minimum is 3.5 kg without mags. If I recall, the Sprint barrel is all that is offered new from Anschutz. Most on the World Cup use the lighter barrel and have rifles underweight so they can ballast them up to minimum and put the weight where it has the most benefit to the athlete.

The Marlin was speced as a summer biathlon rifle where the guns remain on a rack at the range while athletes run the lap.

After limited venues, expense is a huge barrier to entry for biathlon. Add in the cost of decent skis and expendables like ammo and it is not an inexpensive sport. Many clubs have loaner rifles and will allow you to use any bolt action rifle with legal sights. You can race with a Savage FVT but you ...

At the risk of causing a conflict with the coach, I'd have your son use the NPA he has developed and had success with. The 45 approach is to save time wiggling around on the mat and might be appropriate if there is a fresh page to start with. The skis will cause hassles with position shooters as many...

Those mods will work for summer races where there is no chance of snow fouling the sights and you don't have to carry the rifle. Snow covers on the sights are super important. You can blow out the rear sight but the front , not so simple. Many times a snowflake will act as a seed and the moisture in...

Yes, biathletes are very concerned with NPA. It is usually set to the center target. Prone is like hitting the 7 ring so setup is still super important. World Cup athletes are on and off the mat is about 30 seconds. It takes about 7seconds to get the rifle off the back, swap mags and get into positi...

I don't recall reading anywhere that bloop tubes are illegal. Biathlon rules tend to be pretty vague. Having said this, they interpret them to be"if we didn't specifically say no, then it must be okay". Here is a link to the rules http://www.biathlonworld.com/en/downloads.html I think you ...

Source of info

Here is a great site with reports and not just race listings. Most of what they post is World Cup info. When the domestic events start I can post links.

This is the official IBU site which has links to live race streaming.

Can you push the pins out of the hinges? I lost the keys to my rifle case while heading to an event. The case was mostly for air travel and keeping the gun safe not theft proofing. The hinge pins pushed out and I had a good event. Afterwards, I popped the pins into place and flew home

Holding your breath will put extra time between beats. Good cardio fitness will also slow the heart when at rest while shooting. Holding? I always shoot on my exhale. Matt Holding your breath is not a huge inhale and not exhaling. Holding is just purposely not participating in the breathing cycle. ...

This is a case of cry once or many times. The 7-2 will work fine for summer with less modifications but has a few more speedbumps for winter use. Most 7-2s come without sights. MT Guns has figured a way to add decent peeps sights for a few hundred bucks. I think Mac uses an Air Arms rear mounted in ...

Lube buildup is a HUGE issue. Many biathletes spend the morning prior to a race wiping the lube off the rounds. Besides gacking up the barrel, the wax fouls the firing pin and ejectors. Most athletes remove the rifle from the car and leave it on the racks in the range to cool to ambient and leave th...
